Gases see delays from backlog at crime lab
Staffing cuts and a larger workload have caused a backlog at Iowa's state crime lab. Crime lab staff dropped over 10 percent since 2006 to 49, while case assignments rose to nearly 15,500 by fiscal 2011. DNA turnaround averaged 81 days last month, with priority given to crimes against people.

Firefighter killed directing traffic on I-80 in Iowa
Shelby firefighter Michael Collins 41 of Minden was struck and killed while directing traffic at a crash scene on Interstate 80 near the Shelby exit in Pottawattamie County. The driver involved is David Lee Thies 43 of Ames. The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the incident.

A 60 year old Charles City man Dennis Knecht was fatally injured at an excavation site near Colwell Floyd County. Rescue crews arrived at 4 20 p m Saturday and Knecht was found trapped under a skid loader He died later at Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Iowa Valley among 20 Iowa schools picked for environment grant
Principal Shawn Krem of Iowa Valley in Marengo said the news left him in shock after the school was chosen to receive a share of $14 million over four years to study bullying, safety, attendance and student engagement as part of the Safe and Supportive Schools program.
