Cedar Rapids Cable TV Franchise Vote Is Sought

Cedar Rapids residents may vote on granting General Electric Cablevision Corp nonexclusive 35 year emus to construct and operate a table television system within the city. Petitions with at least 35 signatures from each of the 36 precincts were filed for a Nov 7 referendum. City officials are checking signatures as 26 inquiries had been made by other cable interests and council members have been cool to cable TV local efforts.

Supreme Court upholds DRM school board election plan

In a unanimous decision the Iowa Supreme Court rejected Deep River publisher Charles Dunham’s challenge to the Deep River Millersburg community school system. The court found electing four directors from specified districts and one at large constitutional if populations are near equal, affirming a lower court ruling by Judge Ira Morrison.

Palmby denies inside data in Soviet grain dealings

Clarence Palmby former deputy secretary of agriculture now Continental Grain executive testified to a House subcommittee that no inside information was used in grain dealings with the Soviet Union. He said no agreement was reached in Moscow in April 1972 and labeled such claims lies.

Linn County plans 3 Million Home bond approval

Linn supervisors announced plans to seek voter approval for a 2,959,000 maximum cost for a county home replacement. The project, a 200-bed facility at the 60 acre county farm, would be funded by a 0.675 mill levy for 15 years. Details were limited, with a goal of a residential, homelike, one or two story complex.

Audit Finds Benton Fund Shortage in Vehicle Taxes

The state auditor reported a $5,966.07 shortage in the Benton county motor vehicle department and turned the matter over to the Benton county grand jury. The audit found 73 cases where taxes or registration fees paid to an employee were not recorded, with amounts from 80 cents to 713.42, covering Jan 1, 1971 to Aug 24, 1972.

Communist forces seized a district capital in Quang Ngai province south of Da Nang, marking a third such capture in a month. Cedar Rapids schools cut budget by five hundred thousand

The Cedar Rapids school district must reduce its general fund by $503,906 due to an enrollment drop from 24,623 projected to 24,196 as of Sept. 15. The district’s general fund budget now totals $23,736,168 after adjustments for enrollment and per pupil costs, with state auditor figures reflecting a reduction of 436 pupils at $81 each.
