Seven Die In Iowa Crashes Weekend Toll
Seven people died in Iowa traffic crashes over the weekend. Ottumwa resident Florence McGuire, 69, died after being struck by a U.S. postal truck. Ottumwa driver Norman Brandt, 37, identified as the truck operator. Ainsworth teen Janice Marie Keeler, 16, died when the car she rode in ran off Highway 92. Car driver David Barntman, 16, injured with another passenger. Gary Wilson, 19, of Aurora died from injuries in a motorcycle truck collision on Highway 20 at Independence. Morning Sun resident Aldene Joyce Wiegand, 41, died when her tractor overturned on a Louisa County road near Wapello. Waterloo man Herman Ullrich, 65, died when his van collided with a truck on a bridge near Tripoli. Maxine Wells, 61, of rural Denver injured. Truck driver Ronald Bird, 24, of Friedley Minn., suffered cuts. A Madrid duo, Raymond C. LaValley, 61, and his son Loren D. LaValley, 35, died in a two car crash near Polk City. Calvin Schultz, 21, of Charles City, injured.

Writing Award to Iowa City Teacher
Dr. J. Brooke Workman of West High School Iowa City won second place in the ninth annual National Education Association teachers writing contest. He wrote a humorous semi autobiographical sketch about an English teacher in an overseas government school confronting an administrator seeking algebra teachers. He will receive a cash prize and a Washington DC trip on Oct. 19 to be honored. His article will appear in Today's Education.

Junk Car Clean Up in Benton County Begins Phase I
Jaycees started phase I of a junk car removal drive in Benton County last weekend. By Saturday afternoon more than 200 junked vehicles were stored in a county field east of the city after a survey by FFA boys. Phase III will start Monday with a crusher from Hiawatha to crush the junkers.

Federal Revenue Sharing May Avert Iowa Tax Hike

Married October 27 1919 Cedar Rapids to Veneta Harrison. They farmed near Toledo. Deputy under three sheriffs then two-term sheriff. Draft board member in World War II. Surviving wife two brothers Floyd Toledo and Glenn Miami and several nephews and nieces. Memorial fund is being established.

Twins Die Born In Service Station Birth Tragedy
In Omaha a mother Theresa Sailors 17 and her twins born in a Council Bluffs service station restroom died at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. One twin died Sunday morning the other Sunday afternoon after premature birth. Mrs Sailors and the babies were moved from Bob's 1-29 service station to a Council Bluffs hospital then to Omaha.

Flees Train On Trestle Hurt In Fall
COUNCIL BLUFFS AP A 16-year-old boy fell from a railroad trestle while fleeing an oncoming Burlington Northern freight train. Gary Bingham of Manawa, in serious condition, reportedly tripped or was shaken loose from a 45‑foot fall on a 300‑foot trestle west of Malvern. Dale Dunham, also of Manawa, escaped injury. The pair had been hunting when the accident occurred.

Army Exam Center Reopened in Des Moines
DES MOINES UP I officials say the Army Examination Center at Fort Des Moines has reopened after extensive tests by Walter Reed Army Hospitals staff. The center had been closed since Sept 6 when an employee tested positive for hepatitis during a routine medical exam. state health officials ordered closure as a precaution. Walter Reed later found no hepatitis evidence and the center was reopened.
