Des Moines OKs camping ban amid regional objections
A 5-2 Des Moines City Council vote approved a camping ban ordinance after officials from Johnson and Linn counties and several eastern Iowa cities urged delay. The measure lowers fines to 15 dollars, waives penalties for those unable to pay, and mandates shelter directions if space is available. A letter from regional officials urged pursuing noncriminal approaches and collaboration with the National Alliance to End Homelessness.
