Alaska to switch to two time zones in 1990 plan

Alaska will reduce four time zones to two beginning Oct. 30, placing virtually all residents in the Yukon zone one hour behind Pacific Time. The Aleutian Islands will use Alaska Time. Gov. Sheffield announced the plan with approval from Elizabeth Dole as the nation returns to standard time. Business interests in the railbelt back the change for easier commerce with the East Coast. Some editors warn of adjustments, noting stock listings may not fit evening editions.
