Greeks Seek To Modernize Rail Network

ATHENS AP reports an ambitious plan to modernize Greece's aging railway system. Transport Minister Emmanuel Ethenakis envisions trains reaching up to 187 miles per hour by 1978 with safety as a priority, after a string of deadly accidents including 5 deaths on Dec. 23 and 19 killed in a head on outside Larissa. Radio-telephones were added in May, but much rolling stock is 30 years old or more and the 1,622 mile network remains largely single track along cliffs and coastlines.
