Low tar cigarettes may reduce risk but not safe, cancer expert says
Dr. Lawrence Garfinkel of the American Cancer Society cites a 12 year study finding low tar and nicotine cigarettes lower lung cancer mortality by about 26 percent and reductions in other cancers and heart disease though he warns the risk remains higher than for non smokers. He notes quitting altogether is best and reductions in daily intake may be more beneficial than switching to low tar brands.
