A Indiana grand jury charged Ford Motor Co. with three counts of reckless homicide and one count of criminal recklessness over the Pinto crash that killed three teenagers. Ford called the indictment unwarranted and vowed appropriate action.
Detroit based report shows the Big Four automakers sold 134,642 vehicles in the first 10 days of September, down 15 percent from a year earlier. GM led the decline with a 24 percent drop to 65,735 units. Ford rose 0.7 percent to 49,290 with a daily rate of 7,041. Chrysler fell 19 percent to 16,058. AMC gained 2.2 percent to 3,559. Total for year to date hits 6,478,946 passenger cars, up 2.1 percent.
General Motors trims average price of 1979 Chevrolet Monza and Pontiac Sunbird by 3 percent versus 1978 models. New standard equipment lifts value, with 1979 Monza coupe at 3617 dollars and Sunbird coupe at 3781 dollars, while models go on sale September 15 to boost competitiveness against Ford Mustang and Mercury Capri.
University of Pennsylvania economists say the US economy remains very weak with high inflation and rising unemployment but no recession through 1980. They warn a substantial shock could trigger a recession and slow growth, with inflation seen at 7 to 8 percent.
