Winneshiek County District Court Judge Frank Ellwood acquitted Robert and Linda Sessions in the truancy case over home education for their 8 year old Erik. Costs were assessed to the state after the July magistrate ruling found them guilty. The Sessions had appealed after refusing to enroll Erik in Decorah Community Schools.
Abby Van Buren born Pauline Friedman Phillips spoke at Sinclair Auditorium about her 22 year Dear Abby career. She described starting with little journalism experience and quickly becoming a top columnist in a talk sponsored by the Junior League of Cedar Rapids.
Law officials say a Muscatine County farmhouse raid recovered about $20,000 in Nash Finch Co goods stolen from Cedar Rapids and another $20,000 in items stolen around Muscatine. Nash Finch says the thefts have totaled over $100,000 from the company in the past year.
