Extended forecast shows cool, partly cloudy days for Thursday to Saturday with temps in the 50s to 60s and lows around the 40s to 50s. Local city notices list fines, services for multiple towns, and memorials with dates and locations across Iowa including Coralville, Dubuque, Keokuk, and Tipton.
Mr and Mrs Kevin Sterenchuk of 600 Tenth Street SE announce the birth of a son on September 13.
On September 13, a list of addresses welcomed new births for several families. A string of weekday incidents included fires and fuel spills at various city intersections. Multiple individuals were fined for speeding and other offenses, with several others posting bond or paying costs.
The Kirkwood vote shows 70 percent support to restrengthen current operations. Incumbent Morris Allen defeated Mahlon Hill for the board seat, 1 540 to 1 090. Rev Roy Wingate and Robert Davidson won re elections in uncontested races.
James Bostetler a five year old from 3015 Twelfth Avenue SW has been hospitalized since August 25 at University Hospitals Iowa City and will undergo open heart surgery Wednesday morning following a chest injury from a horse kick. An appeal for blood donors is issued and requested in the boy's name at University Hospitals. His condition remains critical.
Special scheduling announces THE LAWRENCE WELK SHOW this Saturday at 10:00 PM on KCRG TV Channel 9. The program airs as a weekend feature on local channel nine with a notable variety format.
Judge Loren M. Hullinger Jr. rejected a removal petition filed in Linn district court by an assistant attorney general. He said he will remain on the municipal bench during the suit and intends to seek re election in November, naming three Des Moines lawyers as his defense team.
The Kirkwood election notes high turnout aided by 18 to 20 year olds registering and a three quarter mill levy extension. Last year 11 207 ballots were cast, while 1969 saw 5 537 amid sex education debates. Bever garage precinct led with 659 votes, YMCA with 22.
A Monday night fire damaged the kitchen and living room of an upstairs apartment at 611 Eighth Street SE. Officials said a short in a deep fat fryer ignited, burning the counter cupboards and kitchen and parts of the living room. No injuries were reported.
Family of Irvan James called to Searsboro after his death Tuesday. Surviving children include Mrs. Charles Allen of 1025 Brockman Avenue Marion Leo James of 808 Blairs Ferry Road NE and Delmer James of 426 Nilsen Road NE. Services will be in Montezuma with Steffe Funeral Home of Montezuma in charge.
W. P. S. Murray, 99, retired Christian church (Disciples of Christ) minister, died after a long illness. Born May 30 1872 in Prince Edward Island, he studied at Bethany College and served in Michigan and Ohio for 51 years. He organized two churches near Warren, served on the Ohio Christian Missionary society board, and received an Honored Ministers pin in 1957. He is survived by his son Barton G. Murray and two grandchildren. Burial in Southington cemetery with services in Warren and Cedar Rapids.
Wilbur Tyner Cozad 78 of 815 Seventeenth Street SE Cedar Rapids died Monday after 37 years in the city. Born January 14 1893 in Shenandoah he married Mildred E. Van Pelt December 23 1934 in Glenwood. A World War I veteran he belonged to St Pauls United Methodist Church Hanford American Legion post Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce and was a former commander of Shenandoah American Legion post and Republican Service League district chairman. Survived by wife a son Robert M. Cozad and two grandchildren. Services 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Turner Chapel East with Dr Glenn McMichael followed by 10:30 a.m. Thursday services at Buntz Funeral Home Shenandoah and burial at Rosehill Cemetery. Friends may call Turner East until 10:15 a.m. Wednesday. Casket not opened after service. Memorials to charity of choice.
Maude Lutz Weber of Long Beach California died Saturday after a brief illness. Former Cedar Rapids Gazette employee, born August 28 1889 in Louisa Iowa. Survived by husband Roy W Weber daughter Mrs Karl Feise two granddaughters four great grandchildren sister Mrs Elmer Stamy and brother Fred N Lutz. Services Thursday 10:30 a.m. Turner East Marion Iowa burial Shiloh cemetery. Friends may call Turner East after 7 p.m. Tuesday.
William Henry Behrens 74 of 2616 C avenue NE Cedar Rapids died Tuesday after a short illness. He served as Linn county engineer 1928 to 1961, semi retired in 1961, fully retired 1971. He was a World War I veteran, member of multiple Masonic and engineering societies, and wife Grace Brutsman Behrens survives with four sisters. Funeral Thursday at First Congregational and St Marys Strawberry Point. Burial Cedar Memorial Turner east.
Myrtle Iva Fox former Cedar Rapids resident and widow of John D. Fox died Friday in Huntington Beach California after a long illness. Born December 18 1892 in Moulton she is survived by two daughters Mrs Eugene Stotler Cedar Rapids and Mrs Dayne Hawk Fountain Valley California a son Robert Fox Coronado California five grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Services were held at 1 30 p m Thursday by the Rev Stephen Root of St James Methodist Church with burial at Cedar Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call at Turner East.

State officials recount a four day prison rebellion that left two hostages stabbed to death and 42 prisoners injured. Governor Rockefeller backed the assault to retake control aided by national guardsmen. Oswald defended the decisive charge while Ricotta warned against outsider access to the facility.
Cedar Rapids city council deferred final acceptance of the high bid for two Oak Hill urban renewal housing sites. Mayor Donald Canney cited unanswered questions on housing density and community involvement, with meetings urged between Chesapeake Development Corp and city officials. Bids ranged from 71,075 to 47,950, and the council planned to reject two nearby parcels bids for noncompliance.
The Link-Belt Speeder division of FMC Corp opens a two-day conference in Cedar Rapids with about 300 management staff from around the world arriving Tuesday. A two-hour Wednesday demonstration will show $3 million worth of equipment, followed by breakfast, a business meeting and luncheon. Tours of the Sixth street SW and Bowling street SW plants are planned with a beef barbecue at the Bowling plant.
Ames Quad City Construction of Rock Island is the apparent low bidder at 333 933 for a 72 inch outfall sewer draining I 380 on Cedar Rapids southwest side. Work will start Oct 4 with a June 10 1972 finish. The project runs nearly a half mile from the interstate to the Cedar River under Thirteenth Avenue SW.
A Cedar Rapids area school bus left the ditch northwest of Hiawatha near 8:30 a m injuring one girl. Jean Turner was treated at St Luke s hospital for a minor head laceration and released. The driver Richard Turner faces potential suspension as investigation continues.
