A helicopter tour over western Iowa exposed the flood havoc from Troublesome creek and Nishnabotna, with Atlantic and Harlan among hard hit areas. Officials warned of more rain, but crop damage may be the main toll, and aid for public facilities and farms is anticipated.
In the Central Community school district election held Monday, Marsene Gamm of Volga lost in a three-way race for two at-large seats. Mary O'Meara of Elkader won 310 votes and Carl Wessel of Elkader, an incumbent, won 312 for two three-year terms. Gamm finished with 262. William W. Sadewassar of Elkader won the Area 5 two-year term 268 to 233 over Don L. Meyer. William E. Witt of Elkader was unopposed for treasurer with 471 votes. The five district directors plus two at-large directors comprise the school board.
William Funder Durk defeated incumbent William Hilton in Mondays school election. Incumbent Board President Victor Kephart was reelected by a 23 vote margin.
Incumbent Martha Moore and challenger Louis Vincent won the Columbus Junction school board seats in Monday's election, shaping the local education panel with two distinct leadership voices.
Audrey Dodson and Duane Lorack won in the Monday school election in Lone Tree.
