Floods in southeastern France kill 26 as rescue operations continue
Torrential rain in the Gard Vaucluse and Herault regions left 26 dead and hundreds missing or unaccounted. Damaged infrastructure cut power to tens of thousands and disrupted train service among Nimes Montpellier and Avignon. Prime Minister Raffarin and Interior Minister Sarkozy toured relief areas and pledged 9.8 million euros for the region.

Surgery favored for carpal tunnel over splints
A Dutch study in the Journal of the American Medical Association finds surgery yields better long term results for carpal tunnel than wrist splints. Among 176 patients, 80 percent improved after three months with surgery versus 54 percent with splints. benefits persisted at 18 months.

Senate OKs national Amber alert system to locate abducted children
The Senate approved a bipartisan bill to create a nationwide Amber alert framework spending up to 25 million dollars to help states cities and communities set up alert networks. Seventeen states already use Amber alerts and Iowa plans implementation. The system aims to speed rescues including cases this summer such as two teens found in a California desert and a Texas infant recovered from a parking lot.
