On the first anniversary of the 9 11 attacks President Bush spoke from Ellis Island vowing to prevail and secure the nation while ceremonies at Ground Zero Pentagon and a field in Shanksville paused for a roll call of 2 801 dead and missing. The nation relived the tragedy as families mourned and united in resolve.

About 1000 Cedar Rapids area residents gathered on May's Island to mark the first anniversary of the 9 11 attacks. Mayor Paul Pate urged readers to remember the day as a seminal event that changed lives and called for a continued living memorial through daily acts. Cedar Rapids officials and school choirs participated, with tradition including bagpipes and an honor guard. About 1500 copies were handed out by KDAT.
