Red Clover May Be Perennial Says Iowa Botanist
Dr. Robert Poulter of Iowa City reports six years of University of Iowa research showing autumn wounding in red clover leads to 50 to 95 percent infection next summer unless cut after Sept 1. If not pastured or clipped, many fields show only 1 to 10 percent infection by midsummer. He suggests breeding a less hollow stem to extend life of a seeding beyond three years.
