Ottumwa Mayor under fire for comments on Saudi student attack

Ottumwa mayor Jerry Parker faces critique from the Wapello County attorney for revealing confessions in the Aug. 29 assault on five Saudi Airline employees. A Saudi student disputed Parker's account while officials move possessions of the attacked students to new housing in unspecified cities. Parker defended his statements as not prejudicing the case, noting three assailants signed confessions though the student Maher Faden says more were involved. He warned the grand jury investigation could lead to arrests. The incident follows earlier violence affecting Saudi students and the closure of an English language program at Indian Hills Community College, a $2 million loss Parker says could have been avoided with earlier suspect identification.
