Woman begins farming at sixty in Iowa hog operation
Alicin Nelson, age 64, runs a 12 acre farm 414 miles southeast of Van Horne with 55 sows and 11 in farrowing, handling feeder pig sales and replacement stock. She learned farming after buying land in 1972 to cover mortgage, keeps a busy night schedule caring for newborn litters, and uses Bounty towels during farrowing. Her husband, 66, works social security and helps when available, while cats number around 60 on the showplace farm once known for flowers.
