War Threatens State Institution Funds In Iowa
Des Moines figures warn that rising wartime prices may erase the extra appropriations voted last winter for the state’s institutions. Comptroller C Fred Porter warned that gains will be consumed by higher costs for food, fuel, and supplies. With 15,000 inmates in 15 institutions, even small price hikes could wipe out the extra funding in months, threatening doctors, nurses, and attendants. The interim committee's $500,000 emergency fund remains vulnerable as the levy decision looms.
