Marion Independent schools may borrow money along with five other WAMAC districts if the state fails to pay about $200000 owed for the fiscal year ended June 30. The district has received $100000 this week and may use tort and unemployment funds to ease cash flow, with October payroll in view.
Superintendent Bob Hale said extreme temperatures could shorten the school day. An early dismissal announcement is set for 10:30 a.m. Kindergarteners will report at 11:30 a.m. All students would leave at 1:30 p.m.
The Marion City Council in a brief special session awarded a 32 812 84 dollar contract to L and M Borst Brothers Construction for Linnwood Knolls sidewalk reconstruction. The bid is 26 9 percent below estimates, reducing final assessments for property owners. The city will cover removal of old sidewalks and drainage tiling under the new sidewalks.
Keith Askam, 40, executive director of the Marion YMCA for four years, will depart Sept. 30 to head the Northeast Branch of Birmingham's YMCA starting Oct. 15. The Marion Y board searches for a successor with applications due Sept. 27.
Two Cedar Rapids men, Steven R. Jones and John A. Stanerson, appeared in court on two counts each of second degree arson for fires at Stanerson's Marion home and Jones's Cedar Rapids residence. Jones also faces terrorism and harassment counts for threats and gunfire at Polly Dietz's home. Bonds set at 44000 and 27500 dollars.
Former U S Senator Harold Hughes of Iowa will keynote the United Way kick off luncheon on September 20 at noon. Lenny Skutnik will also attend. both praised as role models for people helping people. The event costs 5.75 per person and reservations are advised by calling 364 0167 by next Friday.
Police report says a garage at 5500 Gordon Ave NW was broken into by crawling through a broken window Sunday or Monday. Stolen items include a car cassette player, tapes, two jackets and a watch.
Italian professor Paolo Nello of Pisa University will visit Cornell College as a visiting scholar. He will deliver three public talks on European history, fascism, and the figure of Il Duce in lectures at Hedges Lounge and King Chapel.
Coe fund leaders named division chiefs to recruit 150 to 200 volunteers for calls on area businesses alumni and friends. Leaders include Barbara Pollack McCusky and William L Chadima in Alumni Division Robert De Meulenaere in Commercial William J McCracken in Finance Robert W Gable in Industry Dr James C Manville and Frank W Pfaff in Special Gifts Robert O Danie in Law Richard L Sediacek in Medicine and Peter Wickham in Faculty staff. Kick off dinner for volunteers is Oct 17.
