McGovern Criticizes Wheat Deal In Iowa Campaign
Democratic nominee George McGovern accuses U S agriculture officials and large grain firms of duping farmers in the Soviet grain sale, saying the 750 million three year deal enriched dealers while farmers got little. He told Iowa farmers the government tipped off dealers about timing, allowing them to profit from futures. Agriculture Secretary Earl Butz dismissed the charges as a political stunt, noting the deal was announced by President Nixon. McGovern spoke at the Philip Broderick farm near Waukee and addressed 1500 supporters at Des Moines airport before heading to Albuquerque.

Revenue Sharing Debate Shapes Plan Before 2000 Election
The White House signaled possible reforms to revenue sharing not raising federal taxes while proposing up to 16 billion dollars in grants to states and local governments. The Senate defeated several Kennedy amendments and kept Long's push for a substantial revenue sharing package intact, dispersing about 35 billion over five years. Taft's bid to revise formulas failed amid criticism of the tax effort factor, while Metcalf won approval to reserve a quarter of one percent for Native communities and rural Alaska villages.
