Donald F. McAreavy, 28, and his six year old son Raymond drowned when their speeding motorboat capsized on the Mississippi River in Lacrosse Wisconsin. The family had moved from Delhi, Iowa the week prior. McAreavy, a World War II veteran, farmed near Delhi after the war. He is survived by his wife Helen and two other children. Funeral services are set for Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in a local Catholic church.

Hotel and cafe owners deploy novel methods including vacuums and street fires while entomologist Charles Stiles notes this late summer wave is strongest in about a decade and may last only a few days unless a third wave follows.
In Hibbing Minnesota a 100 lap stock car race saw 43 of 53 entrants crash on the track. Six drivers were hospitalized and tow trucks cleared wreckage for nearly two hours. The race resumed with 32 cars and Ed Sabatino of Hibbing won.
Deloris Nylene Vozenilek a Cedar Rapids resident for 25 years was fatally injured in a Sunday car crash. Services will be at 1 30 p m Wednesday in Beatty Bearle chapel with Rev Frank H Ward. Burial will follow at Oak Hill cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
Mrs. Dora E. Tucker of Huntington Park California, mother of the late Mrs. William Mulvihill, died recently. She was a frequent Cedar Rapids visitor, and her granddaughter Mrs. A. J. Geesaman of 3214 First Avenue NE was notified.
Mrs Reed 85 of 1670 Sixth Street NW remains under a physician care at home and may receive visitors. Cedar Rapids Bar to open all day tomorrow. Police investigate Tractor Supply Co break in at 112 First Street NW found at 12:45 AM with a broken overhead door window entry and two pocket knives missing.
Police in Cedar Rapids Iowa City and Amana pursued connected incidents Tuesday. A car stolen from the Hearn Stevenson used car lot Monday was found abandoned near a service station in Amana with tampered pumps and a set of women's golf clubs reported stolen in Iowa City Monday night.
Police Sgt. Leonard Bruce reported a record 1200 dollars in court receipts over the Labor Day weekend. Bruce handles all receipts and noted the total covered noon Saturday to Tuesday morning.
Des Moines AP Shorty the Hereford steer owned by Arnold Sherriff of Orient sold for 1.30 a pound at the Iowa State fair auction, bringing 1330 to Rath Packing Co of Waterloo. Second high price went to Robert Rees of Pleasantville for a Shorthorn, 42% cents a pound. Police ruled out a safe cracking at McNamara Homemaker's House after a window was found open and the safe pried, later determined to have been jammed previously.

Gen Jonathan M. Wainwright was buried in Arlington National Cemetery in a cavalry funeral with a soldier’s epitaph.
