City and regional data report temperatures rainfall and wind at noon with forecasts for Friday night through Tuesday. Also included are traffic court actions a series of fires divorce notices Iowa deaths obituaries and medical society notes with dates and burial details.
City offices will have Friday hours limited at the Railroad Retirement Board 321 Federal building. Mrs Lloyd Gefaller plans a trip to Puerto Rico to join her husband stationed at Ramey air force base. A Cedar Rapids man reports $40 stolen from a lockbox in a cedar chest. Others note a funeral guard and relatives travel, NACAs new members, a scholarship award to Evelyn Blaha, visitors to Mrs Sundberg, WAC Corporal Norma Standard on furlough, and James Wiley arrested in Arizona for bad checks.
Delegates from Midwest colleges closed the conference at noon Saturday and elected a continuation committee to plan next year’s meeting. Chairman Charles O. Lerche of Knox College led the panel with Mrs. Lois Henderson of Cornell and F. G. Davenport of Monmouth, Illinois. Monmouth selected as the 1952 conference site. Recommendations on faculty control of athletics were prepared for presentation to college staffs this week.
Police describe Della Beck as ill and frail as inspectors reveal an established First avenue house run with Kathryn Border and an unnamed man. O Mára, an elderly pensioner, admits living with Beck for 11 years and running the operation before moving to Thirty first Street. A two story clapboard building housed rooms on two floors used for prostitution. Possible charges include keeping a disorderly house or house of prostitution.
Darris A. Cress a 16 year old from Toddville was fined 50 dollars and costs in Cedar Rapids traffic court after pleading guilty to reckless driving. Police said he ran a stop sign at high speed about 1 20 a m and eluded a patrol car. He was arrested at 4 30 a m after his car was found parked downtown.
Major John C. Machovec son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Machovec 1724 J avenue NE appointed adjutant general of the Second Air Force stationed at Barksdale AFB Louisiana. He previously served as base adjutant at Turner Field Georgia. His brother Robert a master sergeant in the air force recently completed flight engineer's school at Chanute Field Illinois and is assigned to Davis Monthan Field Arizona.
Inspector Frank Bukacek said Janet Meyer, alias Jean O'Brien, a 29 year old woman hobo, would be brought back from Burlington to face breaking and entering charges in Cedar Rapids. She allegedly broke into Trinity Lutheran church last month and took about $45 from the pastor's study and admitted breaking into several Eastern Iowa churches.
Specific heirs receive $4000 each: Linnie Casterline Carrie Kahl Millie Gano Grayce Hutchens Paul Hutchens. Other $1000 gifts go to Rae Edwards Cleo James James Casterline Ruth Priefle Donald Smith Cyril Williams Alfred Sundberg Tillie Sundberg. Twelve Cedar Rapids and Mechanicsville residents get $500 each plus church and Children's Home gifts. Executors named. Coon will also probated with Lulu Coon as sole heir.
Judge Floyd Philbrick ordered Christopher L. Grosche an Ohio man released from the Anamosa men's reformatory citing his status as an escaped inmate from a Chillicothe mental institution. Grosche, 24, pleaded guilty to breaking and entering in Linn County and faced up to 10 years.
Cleave Staples, 28, of 912 Ninth Street SE, pled innocent to a county attorney's information charging larceny. He appeared in justice court July 25 and waived to the grand jury. Held on $1,500 bond. Accused of stealing $116, a wrist watch and an Eversharp pencil from a St Paul man in Union Depot restroom June 17.
Bennie W. and Viola L. Pos pisil sue Conrad Paul son for 6210.66 alleging due on an oral contract from November 1, 1948. They claim an agreement to form a Marion township property on a stock share basis and that Paulson failed to carry out part of the deal.
Conrad Myers aged 26 of Dubuque pleaded guilty to contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Judge Floyd Philbrick delayed sentencing for two years conditioned on good behavior after Myers was accused of giving liquor to a minor on August 1.
Default judgments were entered Friday for four cases. Builders Material vs William A Fairbanks awarded 163.86 dollars. St Luke s Hospital vs Robert and Leola Owens 206.58 dollars. J R Flynn vs Willard F Kies 171.05 dollars. Al Emmons doing business as Midwest Oil Company vs Mr and Mrs R E Lacy 109.58 dollars.
The Iowa Windmill and Pump Company sued Charles L. Finnegan for $120.87 and Ilten and Taege, Inc. sued Lindsey D. Reed for $112.70.
Twelve Coe College faculty with 20 or more years of service will be honored at a 6:30 banquet in Voorhees hall. Joseph H. Kitchin leads with 36 years, followed by peers Marvin Cone 33 and John M. Henry 33, and others ranging from 32 to 23 years of service.
Gromyko and U S critic attack the Japan Britain sponsored treaty calling it not peace but a stage for a new Far East war. Gromyko blasts John Foster Dulles as a warmonger as he reads to 300 reporters. His last clash ends in a defeat with a shouted “we wuz robbed” during a rough conference debate.
The report notes Russia will not sign the peace treaty with Japan sparking fears of all out war in the Far East. Peiping warns it may consider itself at war with Japan if Tokyo joins Western treaties.
Funeral services for Clarence W. Maher 48 of 2413 A avenue NE will be held at St. Matthew's church Monday at 9 am led by Rev. J. D. Kearn. Burial is in Mt. Calvary cemetery. He was born December 6 1902 in Cedar Rapids and worked as an auto service operator in Cedar Rapids. survived by wife Marie mother Mrs Mary Maher Iowa City and sisters Mrs Kathryn Thoman and Mrs August Dresselhaus. Rosary Sunday at 8 pm at Monahan funeral home.
Robert E. Swalley 75 of 1207 Fourth Street SE Cedar Rapids died of a heart attack en route to a hospital Friday after an attack at his daughter Mildred Carter’s home. Born February 27 1876 in Atlantic he is survived by three daughters, two of them in Cedar Rapids, three brothers, ten grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a sister. Services set for Monday at 3 30 p.m. in Beatty chapel with Rev H G Schwegler of First Lutheran officiating. Burial at Mound Cemetery near Watkins. Friends may call at the chapel.
Charles Douglas Stonebraker 79 a Cedar Rapids resident for 50 years died in a local hospital at 9 p.m. Friday after a long illness. He was born Oct 18 1871 in Iowa. Survived by daughter Mrs Bernard Stark and son Ralph Stonebraker both of Cedar Rapids. Burial in Linwood cemetery with services at Turner chapel Monday at 1 30 p m conducted by Rev H G Schwegler. Friends may call at the chapel.
