Government notes Iowa City cuts tire collection program
Iowa City ends its tire collection week after low turnout and shifts to a year round program charging 7 cents per pound. Officials estimate disposal costs at $1.50 per tire, with last year’s 811 tires collected for about $2,200, largely spent on advertising. County programs collected far more in earlier years. The report also covers Central City bond court, traffic changes on First Avenue and Scott Boulevard, planned 19th Street SE gas main work, and parking changes on 29th Avenue.

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee will hold a September 22 hearing on American Indian code talkers in World War II. Eight Meskwaki soldiers from Tama area trained to use their language as a secret code, but few saw action in North Africa due to numbers and device limits. The hearing aims to advance Congressional Gold Medal recognition, with Meskwaki Robin Roberts invited to testify.
