Ford Veto Could Spur Teacher Lobbying Efforts
Des Moines reports that national education leader James Harris says a large local lobbying push by teachers could push Congress to override President Ford’s veto of a major education appropriation. The 15 month bill would provide 7.5 billion dollars in federal aid, with risks to student loans, vocational programs, and emergency funds if veto stands. Harris notes teachers nationwide have pressed lawmakers, especially Rep. Charles Grassley, amid White House pressure. He recently left NEA leadership roles and travels to Washington for a Bicentennial commission meeting.
