Workers Strike At Nuclear Plant In Palo Iowa
About 60 members of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers local 205 at the Duane Arnold Energy Center in Palo went on strike Thursday after labor talks failed to yield a new contract. Officials from Iowa Electric Light and Power Co. said the plant would continue normal operations and remain in NRC compliance while negotiators seek a settlement. the union spokesman said a one-year contract expired September 1.

C R Woman Reported Fair After Accident
Two persons were injured in two accidents Wednesday and Thursday. Paula Jean McGrath, 28, of 129 Harriet avenue NW, is in fair condition at St. Luke's hospital after a one car accident at First avenue and Parkcourt SE. Officers said she was uncooperative but likely driving west on First avenue when she swerved struck a light pole. She suffered head injury and facial lacerations and was charged with failure to have control of her vehicle. Jennifer Crow, 6, of 3002 Second avenue SW, was treated for an ankle scrape and a bump on her head after reportedly running onto E Avenue NW near Edgewood road and a car ran over her foot. The car, driven west on Edgewood road by Mattie Louise Bright, 35, of 150 Westview drive NW, struck her foot. No charges were filed.

Virginia L. Pilcher a 12 year old resident of 515 Twelfth Street SE reported in a police report that while walking in the parking lot of the medical center in the 1000 block of Fifth Avenue SE a boy about 15 or 16 attempted to assault her. He asked for the time, followed, grabbed her by the neck and urged her to go then she escaped and ran to Immaculate Conception school.

Stennis Backs Override of Price Controls on Oil
Sen John Stennis broke with his long record of backing presidential vetoes to announce support for overriding the veto on price controls. The 1973 law expired August 31, leaving $5.25 a barrel for 60 percent of US oil while 40 percent sold at world market levels. Soviet oil output surpassed the United States in 1974, rising 9 percent to 3.4 billion barrels as US production fell 5 percent to 3.2 billion. OPEC’s annual output dipped from 11.3 to 11.2 billion barrels.
