The Iowa State Patrol will add 71 troopers to boost highway safety during the holiday weekend. Authorities emphasize visibility to deter risky driving as Labor Day travel remains deadly with eight fatal crashes last year and alcohol played a role in several. Local departments reported numerous speeding stops and a few arrests in the Interstate 80 area. Nationwide, about 28.7 million travelers are expected by vehicle, with the Midwest seeing 5.5 million, as Operation CARE targets alcohol and other violations.

Landmark Amana restaurant sign ordered down
Connie Zuber learned this week that the neon sign her husband Bill Zuber installed in 1949 must come down. The two story building on Highway 6 in Homestead has long marked Amana Colonies for motorists. The ACLUD ban on neon signs, adopted in 1996, aimed to restore 19th century heritage. Exceptions were granted to two restaurants, Ox Yoke Inn and Colony Inn, in 2003, later upheld after a court challenge.
