Illegal immigrants stay in Iowa as U S numbers drop

A Pew Hispanic Center report finds U S unauthorized immigrant inflow fell by two thirds from March 2007 to March 2009, but Iowa retains a sizable undocumented population due to local job availability. Wind energy eyed to fill Iowa’s manufacturing job gap

Iowa City eyes split 21 law for concerts with wall divide

City Council hears proposal to allow under 21 entranc es for entertainment events like concerts under a split alcohol zones plan. Bars would separate alcohol free and alcohol allowed areas by a wall, prompting mixed reactions from local venues and artists. The change follows the 21 only rule in effect after 10 p.m. since June 1, with a public vote set for November 2.

Pheasant population in Iowa hits record low on roadside count

Iowa’s pheasant population fell to a record low 11 birds per 30 mile route in the August roadside survey. Upland game biologist Todd Bogenschutz cites four harsh winters and wet springs as key factors, predicting a third straight record-low harvest when the season opens Oct 30. Last year’s harvest dropped 29 percent from 2021, with about 74,000 hunters taking roughly 271,000 roosters.
