Linn County Supervisor Sawyer says a bond referendum this fall should let residents choose the jail location. He favors sites other than May's Island and will not campaign for a plan he does not fully support. The board will decide on the bond proposal Tuesday.
All city county and federal offices closed Monday for Labor Day. Cedar Rapids bus service halted, garbage collection delayed by one day next week, and the public library closed. No regular mail deliveries or post office lobby service except lockbox. expedited mail still delivered. Normal mail resumes Tuesday.
Severe rainfall has closed the lower Matsell Bridge Natural Area campground while the upper area remains open. Three other sites including Flying Squirrel at Pinicon Ridge Park Wakp icada Natural Area and Walnut Grove along Buffalo Creek were already shut. River levels on the Wapsipinicon were rising with a crest expected soon. Park rangers monitor conditions and campers are urged to call for updates. Cedar Rapids Seminole Valley campground reports Cedar River flooding and may reopen by the weekend with checks by the parks department.
