The August unemployment rate edged up to 7.9 percent from 7.8 as jobs grew by 74,000 to 88 million in a 95.5 million workforce. Teen and Black teenage rates surged while adult male unemployment eased and earnings mild in August.
In the Philippines Taal volcano erupted spewing steam ash and gas up to five thousand feet. Evacuations were completed two days earlier with no casualties reported. In Pennsylvania Paul Gilly received three concurrent life terms for recruiting the murderers of Joseph Yablonski and his family.
In Los Angeles six men, aided by a file clerk, targeted people with poor credit records and, for up to 1500 dollars, altered their reports in major consumer credit bureau computer banks. The indictment details are on page five.
Deputy Gene Parks was shot at three times as he walked to his patrol car from home Thursday night. A light colored late model car fired toward the intersection of Twenty-second Avenue SW and Thirteenth Street SW at about 10 14 p.m. Parks fired back and chased the vehicle but it was lost on Wilson Avenue SW. No suspects or vehicle location had been found by Friday morning.
President Ford begins his fall campaign with a planned stop in Ann Arbor Michigan likely at the University of Michigan. Campaign pacing will favor few speeches weekly and close White House ties to the drive. Carter plans a multi city push from Warm Springs to Newark with states and counties in between.
Cedar Rapids police chief LaPeters asks Linn district court for a declaratory judgment that his firing by Safety Commissioner Colton was unlawful. He seeks reinstatement and back pay arguing lack of council approval and civil service process violations. An acting chief currently runs the department.
DES MOINES AP Iowa's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for August is projected at 5 percent, unchanged from June and July. The state economy remains stable while the national rate edges higher. August residential employment totals 1,281,600 vs 1,241,500 a year ago. unemployment dips to 57,300 from 68,200 in August 1975.
The Cedar Rapids municipal airport tower will close daily from midnight to 7 a m starting Sept 9 due to low overnight use and potential savings. Airport Manager Roy Jameson and the community opposed the plan, and the airport commission may seek legal action to halt the change.
Pasadena reports Viking 2 prepared to separate from its orbiting craft for Americas second Mars landing. Project manager James Martin said the spacecraft is healthy and all systems are go for a 2 40 p m separation, with one radar unit and a gyro scope anomaly noted but not delaying the mission.
