Marion local 1937 and volunteer firefighters collect funds Friday through Monday door to door using reserve fire apparatus for Fill the Foot. Locations include Marion supermarkets and drug stores and the fire station at 600 Eighth Avenue. Call 377-8237 for details.
Marion and Linn-Mar Independent districts announce Monday no classes for Labor Day with students resuming Tuesday. St Joseph's school also on vacation. Building permits issued last week include Iowa Electric Light and Power Co wall at substation 5826 dollars and several homes and additions. Also noted are part time cleanup help at Boston Store and licensing pause for Marion police auxiliary bicycle licenses. The Marion high school yearbook The Quill 1976 edition has arrived for pickup.
Iowa's six member delegation split as five voted with the majority to bar funds for a cost of living pay raise for lawmakers and top officials. The proposed raise would lift salaries from 44,600 to 46,740 dollars. Neal Smith opposed the amendment. Grassley praised deferral to public sentiment while Pressler condemned the vote as a hoax.

President Ford and Attorney General Levi review an FBI gifts controversy involving director Clarence Kelley who may face discipline. Levi will not decide until staff findings are examined. Kelley says he may restitute only gifts clearly not permitted.
A 48 year old Cedar Rapids man was treated at St Luke’s hospital after a car motorcycle crash at E avenue and Fourth street NW. Joe Harry Gluba Jr of Gordon Avenue NW was injured when a car driven by Randy P Koch of Oxford crossed his path after stopping for a stop sign. Koch was charged with failure to yield the right of way.
Miami report says Jocko the monkey on the Hamrick five acre farm was shot and killed. Dana Hamrick 14 found the animal and the family contemplates forming a vigilante committee to catch the killer.
Washington will host the 11th annual Northwest Iowa Community Conference from September 15 to 17. Rep. Berkley Bedell says former presidential candidate Rep. Morris Udall, Rep. Brock Adams, and Rep. Richard Bolling are set for a panel on How Congress Works. Local officials from 22 counties are expected to attend with topics on general revenue sharing and rural transportation.
Sharon Kearney of Cedar Rapids was ordered to pay 6000 dollars restitution after pleading guilty to fraudulent acts involving Aid to Dependent Children payments. The court suspended the three month jail term and set restitution for actions between 1969 and 1974.
Truman J. Newhard, 31, of 518 Seventh Street SE, was listed in good condition at Mercy hospital after his motorcycle crossed a driveway and sidewalk and struck a building on 15th Street SE. Police say he lost control while turning from Sixteenth Avenue SE at about 7:40 p.m. injuries included a crushed collarbone and head bruises.
A Cedar Rapids woman Beverly White pled guilty to a second drunk driving offense after an Aug 7 1976 arrest. She received 60 days in jail with 30 days suspended and a $500 fine. Her original deferred sentence was revoked. Other local cases included Ri chard Sabins of Oskaloosa and several defendants granted deferred sentences.
A second larceny from a person charge is filed against 19 year old James E. Jackson of 422 Tenth avenue SE. He allegedly snatched a purse from Messie Hughes on J street SW August 20. Jackson, arrested on a separate theft warrant, is jailed on a $10,000 bond.
The Louvre museum in Paris opened to the public on November 8 1793. Its construction began in 1204 under King Philippe Augustus and the fine art collection was started by Francis I in the sixteenth century.
