Linn County Supervisors plan a 10 am vote to forgive property taxes for flood victims deprived of use of their property. Residents must apply within 30 to 45 days, prove disruption under penalty of perjury, and land tax abatement is uncertain beyond a portion of parcels.
By Cindy Hadish The Gazette Stacie Johnson of Linn County Solid Waste Agency notes incentives can curb bag use. Jo Dixon of Plato's Closet offers a $10 sales credit for declining a bag. from 100 bags a day to five. Johnson asks residents to sign a pledge for a reusable bag via the Pledge Tree.
At New Bohemia Arts Festival in Cedar Rapids the city collects plastic bags from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday in the New Bohemia Cultural District near Third Street and 10th Avenue SE. The film Addicted to Plastic screens at Knight's Farm in Springville on Oct. 10 with separate child care and adult sessions featuring a bonfire after the 5:30 p.m. showing.
Pat Biderman, owner of the Cedar Springs Hotel, reflects on the 11 room resort overlooking the Cedar River that flooded in 2008 and will soon be razed. Kerry Koch, a Marion metal detector hobbyist, searched the grounds for mementos but found only a locket and wheat pennies.
A Des Moines report notes August marks a seventh straight monthly decline in state tax revenues. November 2008 showed no bottom, with overall receipts down 4.1 percent year to date. Analyst Jeff Robinson called August a bad month and warned the decline may continue.

SEIU Local 199 represents about 2800 workers and has not formally announced opposition though leader Cathy Glasson notes the union’s stance.
