Williamsburg native Roland Holden battled leukemia for a decade before his 1995 death. His family donated 25 million to the University of Iowa US Cancer Center, now Holden Cancer Center, announced on what would have been his 85th birthday. The gift stands as the second largest in university history after 1999.
The University of Iowa received large gifts including 3 million from Roy Karro for the US Athletics Hall of Fame, 3.75 million from the Sahai family for medical education and research, 5 million from Myron and Jacqueline Blank for an honors center, 6 million from the Carver Trust for medical education, 25 million from the Roland Holden family for an Al Cancer Center, 30 million from Henry Tippie to the College of Business, 35 million for patents from DuPont Chemical.
