Canarygrass and Trefoil Pastures Compared in Iowa Beef Study

Iowa State researchers compared birdsfoot trefoil and reed canary grass as pasture forages in three grazing trials at Beaconsfield from 1965 to 1967. Yearling steers averaged 620 pounds, some fed corn after pasture, others on pasture alone, with grain supplementation affecting gains and beef yields. Canary grass produced higher daily gains on pasture and overall beef per acre with grain, while trefoil offered lower costs per pound of beef and potential weed control benefits.

Indian Meal Moth Infests Iowa Corn Bins

Dr Harold Gunderson Iowa State extension entomologist reports corn in storage in Iowa is infested by Indian meal moth larvae. Full grown larvae reach about three quarters of an inch and appear dirty white to pinkish white with a light brown head. The moth feeds on surface grain, eats the germ, and spins a silk web that crusts the surface reducing air flow. A spray of malathion at two percent and one gallon per 1000 square feet is advised, followed by breaking up webbing to restore air movement. Malathion residues stay below nine parts per million for edible grain.
