Burlington Paper Surrenders Prison Letters Over Religion Case

Burlington Hawk Eye publisher John McCormally turned over letters written by three Iowa state penitentiary inmates to reporter Les Peck to Iowa Attorney General Richard Turner. The letters, written by inmates Rob Loney Warner Kelly and David Dowell of the Church of the New Song, are tied to a lawsuit seeking recognition of the church at Fort Madison. The publisher said the decision followed federal subpoenas and advised by lawyers to avoid a costly fight.

Top Officials Push Bottle Deposit Bill in Iowa

Des Moines Iowa lawmakers heard testimony from Larry Crane director of the Department of Environmental Quality and Elliott Hibbs deputy director of the Iowa Department of Revenue advocating a mandatory bottle and can deposit. They argued a deposit system would be easier to administer than a litter tax and cited Oregon as a model. The House passed measure would require a ten cent deposit on beer and soft drinks and taxes on litter producing materials with crushed redeemers. Crane urged rejecting a 10 percent handling charge for grocers and Hibbs warned the state would need 120000 annually to run a litter tax if the bill passes.
