Iowa commission facilities raised questions on use by staff

Several commissioners described state owned cabins and a Lansing houseboat as primarily for staff work with some personal stays. John Link said he used the Lansing boat four times in six years for business and personal trips, while Marian Pike denied usage but would consider it to save motel costs. Others defended the savings and said they follow rules, with some admitting limited personal use.

Harrison Defends State Lodging Privilege Amid Criticism

Iowa conservation officials defend using a houseboat and other state lodgings for staff and personal use when off duty. Director Harry Harrison calls it a cost-saving, modest program, with critics urging payment for nonwork stays. He notes 50 percent of boat use is official and explains a hierarchal scheduling system. The boat has a bunked sleeping area, kitchen, and living room and has been used for conferences and recreation.
