Iowa City plans river channel change near City Park

Officials from the Iowa Highway Commission and the U S Army Engineering Department discussed altering the Iowa River north of City Park. The project costs about 400000 with WPA aid and city and university support, moving about 130000 yards of earth to reroute the river and build a river wall near the park.

La Porte City Couples Observe Anniversaries

Mr. and Mrs. M. Ashley celebrate their fortieth wedding anniversary with a family reunion at Riverview Park in Waterloo on July 1. They farmed in Slings Creek township before moving to La Porte City and have five children, twenty one grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Lane also celebrate their fifty four years of marriage with a Sept. 3 observance at home. They have three sons and seven grandchildren. The La Porte City couple moved to the area in 1917 after a farming career.

A raid by 23 officers from federal state and county agencies swept eight Allamakee County places including Waukon Junction Jack O Lantern Postville Thomas cafe and James Clancy s in towns across Decorah Lansing Rossville and surrounding areas. Seizures included sealed liquor unsealed liquor alcohol and punched boards while two operators were jailed for alleged resistance. authorities pledged further questioning of others suspected of Sunday beer sales.

Home Economics Class For Tipton Boys Attracts 28

TIPTON The first home economics class for boys at Tipton High School drew 28 students on the first day. The group will help shape the course covering clothing selection and care, personality, etiquette, meal planning and serving, entertaining at home, and home management. One student said it would help if he ever took responsibility in the home.

Funeral services set for Henry Schrock in Iowa City

Funeral services for Henry Schrock 86 of Iowa City will be at Oathout's chapel Saturday at 2 p.m. He lived in Iowa City for 44 years and worked in contracting. He is survived by his widow a son Elmer Schrock of Iowa City and Anna Michael of Long Beach. The Hills Presbyterian church marks its fortieth anniversary with a Sunday program honoring Anna Hall 90 longtime member. Hills pulpit is served by University of Iowa religion school students. Dr M Willard Lampe is moderator. District Judge James P Gaffney of Iowa and Johnson counties plans to move to Marengo with his family. Maple turns red in August in Maquoketa yard

A large maple at the corner of Main and Locust in Maquoketa is rapidly showing full fall color with brilliant red foliage, signaling residents to stock coal for a long winter. It is believed to be the first August display of fall colors for this tree in town.

Factories Of Iowa Hold Sealed War Production Orders

Iowa's war resources are counted as 359000 men of military age exist nationwide, with sealed orders in Cedar Rapids Davenport Des Moines Dubuque and Sioux City plants. The plan could mobilize articles such as air planes ammunition and other war goods while civilian production continues. Allocations cover 72 items from basic steel to textiles and equipment.

Biermann Offered Federal Position in Food Stamp Plan

Former congressman Fred Biermann of Decorah is offered the post of assistant regional director of the food stamp plan under the Department of Agriculture. The $5,000 yearly salary requires relocation to Milwaukee, the regional headquarters, and Biermann has not decided whether to accept. The offer came from Milo Perkins of the Federal Surplus Commodities Corporation at Secretary Henry Wallace's request.
