The Baptist General Convention of Texas voted to halt about 5 million dollars in SBC funding in protest of a perceived fundamentalist shift by national leaders. Texas also ended 1 million dollars to the Nashville headquarters, while continuing 20 million to missions. The move aims to attract other states to join Texas, seen by SBC leaders as a seed of a competing denomination.

LAPD chief links party shooting to realistic prop gun

LAPD Chief Bernard Parks blamed a realistic looking prop gun for the fatal shooting of actor Anthony Owain Lee at a West Los Angeles costume party. Officer Tarriel Hopper, 27, fired nine shots after seeing what appeared to be a gun through a window, with Parks noting replicas are common in movie props and can trigger deadly confrontations. Lee, 39, known for ER and NYPD Blue roles, carried the fake weapon as part of a devil costume and would not have aimed it at anyone.
