Mercy Hospital of Cedar Rapids now owns Hallmar Hall unit after merging with the Margaret and Howard Hall Radiation Center and its convalescent division. The Hall Radiation Center Foundation was the first donor to Mercy’s new Endowment Foundation with a 1.5 million dollar gift.

TV offer: $500 to stop watching TV for a month

The Detroit Free Press offered $500 to 120 families to quit watching television for a month to study addiction. Of those approached, 93 refused, 27 accepted, and five chosen homes received TV repairmen to monitor the experiment starting in September.

Fire destroys Cedar Rapids landmark on Third Street

A Sunday blaze at 1220 Third St SE destroyed the New and Used Shop run by Bennie Graw and an upstairs apartment. Firefighters fought for six hours before declaring total loss and the building was torn down for safety. No injuries were reported. The Red Cross aided 12 people. The site was the original Lebanese immigrant store of Bashara and Kacere families, historic gathering points for Cedar Rapids newcomers.

Average 1977 car cost hits 3007 dollars per year

DETROIT UPI Hertz Corp reports the typical 1977 model costs rose to 3007 dollars yearly, 7 percent higher than 1976, driven 10000 miles annually, with a 30.1 cent per mile average. Insurance up 25 percent to 560 dollars, driving total costs since 1973 embargo up nearly 50 percent.
