Drying Corn Requires Freeze and Wind, Reed Says
Iowa weather expert Charles D. Reed reports a severe freeze with strong northwest winds is needed to dry the corn crop. In drier northern counties up to 60 percent of corn has been hushed, but overall husking and cribbing lag due to moist conditions and soft ears. Seed corn left in fields may be damaged. soybean threshing yields are generally good. Winter wheat rye and pastures show fair growth with rainfall needed in some areas. Corn pickers in Wyoming are earning up to 5 cents per bushel, with most farmers cribbing and cooler weather awaited. In Westchester ideal weather boosted corn husking. prices paid range from 3 to 4.25 cents per bushel.
