Farm Prices Slide as Meat and Grains Fall Across Board

Prices for beef cattle slipped to 31.80 per hundredweight from 33.40 a year earlier, with meat animal prices about 20 percent below last year. Corn fell to 2.33 a bushel from 2.60, wheat to 2.59 from 4.02, reflecting bumper crops and softer demand abroad. Russian grain imports remain substantial but below last year due to a near record crop in the Soviet Union.

Watergate tapes cited in inquiry into Ford ties

Brooks revealed details from a congressional inquiry showing Charles Ruff and Attorney General Edward Levi declined to examine the tapes due to insufficient evidence against Ford. He noted a routine storage room check found five days in early October when White House staff and a security officer accessed tapes for duplication. Federal election complaint intake in Iowa Tuesday

U.S. Attorney Evan Hultman announced that his office will receive complaints on federal election law violations, including civil rights issues, in the area east of Interstate 35 in Iowa. Cedar Rapids police charged three juveniles ages 14 and 15 after an alleged marijuana possession Friday night near Bever Park at 9 59 p m. The youths were arrested and released to their parents custody.

Diane Harding reports a $60 men’s goosedown coat stolen from Turner Microphone. Glen W. Brehm says a top coat $80 and gloves $10 taken from his Roosevelt Royale rack. A TV valued at $300 was stolen from the Holiday Inn. William Meskimen reports tools and repair parts totaling $180 stolen from his residence. A toolbox and tools worth $500 were taken from Tom Bowker Plumbing’s construction site.

Derailments Hit Milwaukee Train Near Cedar Rapids

Seventeen Milwaukee railroad cars derailed in the Cedar Rapids area on Friday. Seven cars were behind Bob Zimmerman Ford at 4001 First Avenue SE, and 10 derailed seven miles east of Marion. An eyewitness, John Curtis, waded ankle deep in corn using a vacuum to clear overturned cars. Warren Davis, a Milwaukee car foreman, said the derailed cars included corn and other freight from a 30 to 35 car section. G A McCole, Milwaukee trainmaster, declined to guess at causes. The train, carrying about 100 cars, was bound for Chicago from Omaha with loads of sugar lumber and more, with some cars empty. The Marion-area derailment happened around 8:30 a.m. Friday. the eastern derailment occurred five hours later.
