A short in a TV set at 271 Twenty fourth Avenue SW started a still alarm Friday at 1 20 PM. A gas ignition in a car carburetor near Union Station caused another still alarm Friday at 11 19 PM.
A list of traffic violations and related offenses includes speeding fines for several individuals such as James Brown and Donna Reimer with $25 and costs, and various other fines from $2 to $100 plus costs. Jail sentences were imposed on Harvey Mannen and Edwin Beyer, with additional penalties for intoxication and disturbing the peace.
Two motorists had their licenses suspended for 30 days after appearing in municipal court on speeding charges. Howard Stinger faced 45 mph in a 25 mph zone on Second Street NW and James Brown 50 mph in a 25 mph zone with eight people in the car on B avenue NE. Both fines totaled 25 dollars plus costs.

Waterloo, UP. Sheriff H. T. Cap Wagner said authorities tracked down one of four jail break suspects. Gary Kern, 20, was arrested while walking along US 20 about to surrender. two others, Orville Eilers and Joe Bervenik, remained at large. Robbery with aggravation charges accompanied the jail escape.
The Coe College board approved a 1955 56 Growth and Building fund push with goals of 110000 for growth and 300000 for a new Fine Arts building to house music and art. Solicitation begins Nov 1 and runs concurrently. The growth fund finances scholarships faculty salaries and plant upgrades while the building funds support a theater arts facility after fire redirected earlier funds.
A 25-year-old Reinbeck man, Dene E. Jenison, was arraigned Saturday before District Judge Floyd Philbrick and given until 10 a.m. Tuesday to plead to a drunken driving charge after Cedar Rapids patrolmen reported erratic driving on First Avenue West Friday night.
Gerald L. Chapel aged 32 of 614 Sixth Street SE received a suspended five year term in district court on embezzlement by agent. Before Judge Floyd Philbrick he changed his plea to guilty and sought immediate sentencing after admitting taking 125 dollars from a cabinet box at Cedar Rapids Tent and Awning Company where he worked. He was paroled to the state board of parole.
John Knudsen of route 3 reported to the sheriff Saturday that his westbound semi was sideswiped Friday afternoon east of Marion by a car driven by A R Embree of Anamosa. Front of Embree’s car damaged. no injuries.
Two suits were dismissed Saturday in Linn county district court. The cases include a $50,000 wrongful death damage suit filed by Dale C. Peyton as administrator of Frances Ann Peyton’s estate against Rowland Fred Zerba and a divorce suit by Nellie R. Buchman against Jay Buchman.
Bob Peacock of Cedar Rapids reported to the sheriff's office that Friday night his car was struck from the rear by a car driven by Clarence Simpson of Cedar Rapids while turning left off Highway 30 about 18 miles west of Cedar Rapids. Simpson suffered a cut leg in the accident.
Russell R. Jones aged 42 of route 2 was picked up by Linn County officers Friday and held for Poweshiek County authorities who allege a bad check charge.
Four teenagers from Seattle were arrested after a high speed crash near Luana, Iowa, ending a week long spree that included four car thefts and multiple break ins. John Metrevek 16 Jim McAllister 16 Frank Kimball 15 and Sally Sheridan 16 were taken to local jails while authorities arranged extradition.
Three church officials from two denominations will speak Sunday in Cedar Rapids. Rev. Ernest Press will speak at First Evangelical and Reformed Church morning worship. Rev. Walter D. Oetting will headline a Trinity Lutheran rally at 7 p.m. in Roosevelt High School auditorium. More than 1,000 attend as a Reformation festival and rally for a proposed 250000 dollar church school building. Rev. Otto Schrieber will speak at Hiawatha Lutheran Church.
The Iowa Fire Chiefs Association will host a Cedar Rapids conference featuring Clinton Moyer and U S Senator B B Hickenlooper. Sessions begin 9 30 a m Sunday at the Montrose hotel with a 10 a m address by Moyer and a 12 30 banquet for the senator.

John Hartson a Cedar Rapids resident for 40 years and retired farmer died in a Cedar Rapids nursing home at 9 55 a m Saturday after a long illness Born August 18 1870 at New Hampton he married Marie Pagel on February 17 1935 in Cedar Rapids He is survived by his wife six daughters five sons two sisters two brothers 26 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren Services will be held in the Turner chapel with burial in Linwood cemetery Friends may call after 6 p m Saturday
Vivian Blanche Graham died at her home near Shueyville at 4 15 a m Saturday after a sudden illness. Born March 15 1873 near Shueyville she taught in public schools long and served 32 years as Naperville IL principal until retirement in 1942. Survived by sister Miss Laura Graham and aunt Mrs Cora Shoemaker who shared her home and another sister Mrs A R Eckels of Yardley. She was a Congregational church member with services at Turner chapel to be announced.
Eight-year-old John Shock Jr of 2020 J street SW suffered minor injuries when struck by a car Friday at about 4 p.m. The driver, Alvin L Zobel of 1831 K street SW, said the boy ran into the street. The accident occurred on J street near Twenty first avenue SW. He was treated for abrasions and an ankle injury at Mercy hospital and released.
City officials estimate annual annexation costs at 175 000 to 200 000 dollars. Fire protection would require two new stations at about 100 000 each with a 20 year life, two new trucks, sixteen new firefighters, and salaries totaling roughly 80 240 dollars yearly. Police adds 34 500 dollars, street department 18 500 dollars, garbage 14 500 dollars, arborist and park service up to 5 000 dollars, playgrounds 7 500 dollars, and street lighting about 7 500 dollars annually. Oiling and paving would be paid by benefited properties via petitions. Bus service cannot be guaranteed by the city. Gas extensions depend on the utility company and city approval.

An 11 year old Cedar Rapids youth Everett Kohl was to be returned to Cedar Rapids Saturday after arrest in Waterloo. A charge of false uttering of a check was filed in municipal court. He allegedly passed a $20 check at Jack's store drawn on Merchants National Bank marked no account. A detective said Kohl is also wanted by army authorities for being absent without leave.
E B Hughes of Davenport was killed Friday night when his car struck a culvert and plunged into a ditch on Route 2 five miles south of Hillsdale Illinois state police said. He died on arrival at Morrison hospital and was taken to a funeral home in Erie Illinois.
