Plane Crashes at Wellman Injures Pilot with Spine Fracture
Special to The Gazette reports Kenneth Perkins 27 of Oskaloosa sustained a spine fracture when a plane en route from Burlington to Oskaloosa struck a power line while attempting to land near Wellman. He was hospitalized in Iowa City in satisfactory condition Monday.

Martha Hiatt 106, Moravia resident dies after stroke
Martha V. Hiatt 106, native of North Carolina, dies after a stroke suffered returning from Centerville and Seymour. She came to Moravia in 1852 with her parents and had lived in Appanoose County ever since. Husband Orin A. Hiatt predeceased her. five of her 11 children survive. Mrs Hiatt rarely missed voting since woman suffrage. Funeral plans are announced for Monday.

Widow of Des Moines Register editor dies at 80
Mrs. Harvey Ingham Jr., widow of the former editor of the Des Moines Register and Tribune, died of a heart attack Sunday while driving near the Clover Hills golf course. She was 80 and had lived alone at the Commodore hotel since her husband’s death in 1949.

Burglars Take 3000 From Muscatine Supermarket Safe
Police said a Saturday night burglary at a Muscatine supermarket emptied a 500 pound safe containing Saturday receipts. The safe was broken through from the store office and moved to the meat cooling room before the bottom was knocked out. Amount taken estimated between 3000 and 5000 dollars. manager Harold Ogilvie was away in Chicago.

Lord's Acre Sale Brings 400 Plus to Shueyville Church
More than 400 people attended the fourth annual Lord's Acre sale at the Evangelical United Brethren church in Shueyville. Treasurer Harry Ziskovsky said proceeds may exceed $2,000, split between parsonage remodeling and a permanent church building fund. The event featured a rustic country store, bake booth, and auctioned products from volunteers including live poultry, meats, canned goods, produce, and even a small puppy.

Six Injured in Head-On Crash Near Waukon
Six persons were injured when two cars collided on Highway 13 two miles north of here at about 1 30 a m Sunday. Walter Dergsrud 37 Spring Grove Minn suffered a broken jaw and other injuries while Carl Spores 28 Lansing sustained severe facial cuts. Four passengers in Spores car escaped with minor injuries. Dergsrud and Spores were hospitalized. others received first aid. Sheriff William Huffman said the Spores party had been returning from a dance.

Iowa Civil Air Patrol Holds Practice Rescue
Civil Air Patrol units from across Iowa conducted an annual practice rescue of a simulated crashed plane near Des Moines. About 150 CAP members from Oelwein Cedar Falls Waterloo Manchester Fairfield Des Moines Winterset Oakland and Jefferson located the crash site then sent squadrons to the downed plane. Waterloo won the traveling trophy with Winters et second and Oakland third.
