PANMUNJOM Korea Saturday the United Nations proposed withdrawing from certain islands off the Communist coast to gain acceptance of a truce line near the current battle front. The UN also offered minor refinements to the cease-fire line but refused a major withdrawal. Communists pressed for a farther south line.
Allied forces repelled Communist assaults on the east and west of Korea as ground troops seized a hill southeast of Kumsong. In the air, 112 Allied jets and eight B-29s faced 105 MiGs over Sinanju. all Allied planes returned safely, with one B-29 damaged on landing.
Ambassador Allan G. Kirk reported to President Truman that U S Soviet relations show signs of turning in their favor. He stressed that while firmness remains essential, relations are not as tough as before and Korea may see a more reasonable attitude following talks with Vishinsky. Kirk heads to New York and Paris for the U N General Assembly as an adviser to the American delegation.

President Truman urged dockworkers to return to work as a 12 day wildcat strike against the International Longshoremen's Association tied up shipments valued at about 300 million dollars. Strike leader John J. Sampson pledged to continue the stoppage unless a national emergency is declared.
The AFL Building Trades faction blasted President Truman and urged 3,000,000 members to vote Republican in 1952 to press for Taft Hartley repeal. It warned labor cannot rely on the Democrats and argued a GOP win could pressure Democrats to meet union demands after four years.
Cedar Rapids Community Chest totals $138,885.91 after audit by National Association of Cost Accountants volunteers. The 61.3 percent progress leaves $87,844.48 to raise before next Wednesday’s closing day for the united campaign supporting 12 Red Feather agencies and the United Defense Fund. Chest officials call the returns encouraging but note substantial work remains to hit the top.
The Des Moines Community Chest drive reached $796,367, over $10,000 beyond its $? goal. Most men's teams and the women's division exceeded their quotas.
A cold Canadian air mass brought rain sleet and freezing conditions across Iowa. Spencer posted a season low of 22 degrees while Cedar Rapids saw 34 overnight and 43 noon rising to 49 by afternoon. Davenport and Burlington reached 68 degrees as western Iowa endured cold and moisture.
London reports 17 women elected to the house of commons six Conservative and eleven socialist, with all Liberal women defeated. Aneurin Bevan and Jenny Lee form the sole husband and wife team in the new parliament.
An all woman jury in Centerville found Eloise Scarlett, 32, Batavia Illinois, guilty of manslaughter in the April 17 slaying of her two children. She faces up to eighty years. sentencing is set for Wednesday at 10 a.m. Prosecutors said she shot her son, Harry Jr., 11, and beat daughter Doris, 9, as they slept after separating from her husband.
The army said that organized reservists called to arms must serve 24 months and will be released as individuals, not in units, after completing the term. National guard members on active duty will also be released individually after 24 months.
In Santa Ana California Henry Ford McCracken was sentenced on Friday to death for the murder of 10 year old Patricia Jean Hull in a motel cabin last May.
A college student, Chris Huber, 22, from Bowdle South Dakota drew a detailed plan of Waverly First National Bank. Authorities suspected a bank robbery but later determined the sketches were idle doodling from Wartburg College class. An FBI alert and police guard were drawn on the bank but no crime occurred.
Marine Sgt. Lowell H. Levi of Ankeny married Dolores Rolniak of Lisle Illinois after a wartime correspondence begun in September 1950. The pair met in Des Moines October 4 and wed October 20, in Lisle. Levi plans to return to Quantico for duty later in November and then resume life in Ankeny with his locker-plant businessman father.
Dr Albert Covner a 51 year old Nahant heart specialist who vanished Friday was found dead Saturday in a secluded wooded area. The case stems from an $18600 robbery ten days earlier by three teen sitters Roberta McCauley Eileen Jeffrey and Marilyn Curry who admitted taking the money and spending part on clothes. Police await full autopsy results with possible poisoning noted. Covner had been harassed by phone and was described as highly nervous since the theft.
The Defense Production Administration began enforcing President Truman’s order to block publication of material risking national security. A four member committee led by James F. King will classify information and create guides defining security interpretations.
Wealthy Cleveland financier Thomas H. White 57 perished with his wife Kathleen York 56 and daughter-in-law 29 when their single-engine Beech Bonanza crashed into Potomac River near Washington National airport. The crash occurred during landing. cause is unknown. White, president of Commonwealth Securities, was en route to visit Gen. George C. Marshall in Leesburg Virginia.
A statewide search is underway for Wayne L. Armstrong manager of Fuller ton lumber yard in Alexander Iowa missing since Friday night with $3000 in cash from the shop safe. Deputy Ralph Jones says foul play is feared and kidnapping possible. a window was broken from inside and Armstrong’s black Chrysler bearing license 17 4658 is missing.
Churchill announced Anthony Eden as foreign secretary deputy prime minister and leader of the house of commons. Churchill also took defense minister duties while R A Butler became chancellor of the exchequer. Other top posts filled include Lord Woolton Lord Privy Seal Ismay Monckton Lyttleton and Maxwell Fyfe with the full cabinet to be completed next week. The Conservatives led by Churchill gained seats in Inverness and Orkney Shetland leaving them with a majority of 18 while Attlee Bevan split Labour and the Daily Herald attacked Bevan after his resignation and Bevan defended Socialist gains.
The Cook county grand jury indicted Western Union Telegraph Company and 13 individuals on charges of conspiracy to violate gambling laws. A concurrent report criticized local officials for lax enforcement and hinted at payoffs.
Paul Hulin 32, who talked in his sleep about a 1948 killing, was en route to Atlanta to stand trial for the Hagley murder. He denied the crime during waking hours.
