Sears Roebuck to Pay Extra Dividend in 1936 Tax Plan
Sears Roebuck and Company announced an extra quarterly dividend of 1.75 dollars to avoid the 1936 federal tax on undistributed earnings. The move complements a regular 2.00 dollar annual dividend and 0.50 per quarter, with about 4.8 million shares outstanding. President Robert E. Wood noted the fiscal year would exceed 500 million dollars, and the firm plans bonuses for 50,000 employees and stock increase to six million shares. A mid-December directors meeting will determine the second-half payout, likely mid-January 1937.
