Cedar Rapids Event Center construction tightens schedule for arena
The Cedar Rapids city plan for a $67 million downtown Event Center will halt most U S Cellular Center events for over a year starting August. Promoters including Cirque du Soleil are being turned away, with 2012 and 2011 dates blocked to accommodate volleyball tournaments and construction. Local businesses fear revenue losses while some hope temporary use of the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena may offset a portion of the impact.
