President Eisenhower announced unemployment fell by 400,000 to 2.7 million and called 1954 the most prosperous peacetime year. He projected national output rising to 500 billion dollars within a decade and urged ending fears of war and unemployment while highlighting continued gains in jobs, hours, and earnings.

In Cedar Rapids a jury heard that 22 year old Jerry E Heintze accepted 24000 as a partial settlement for injuries from a December 14 1951 auto crash. Attorney Harry Wilmarth said Heintze and his parents received the payment from United Fire and Casualty Company, insurer for Scott McIntyre Jr. The suit names Dallas and Mavis Forwarding Co and Luther Hall, driver of the opposing vehicle, in a collision two miles north of North Liberty on Highway 218.
Rag ing rainstorms and landslides along the Salerno Amalfi coast killed more than 150 Italians and buried dozens in crumbled homes across a dozen towns. In Salerno 62 bodies were found as rescue efforts continue while tourists have largely departed for the season.
