ISIS expands attacks as Mosul battle looms in Iraq
Islamic State widened Monday assaults across Iraq targeting the army and Kurdish forces to ease pressure around Mosul. About 80 ISIS-held villages were retaken in the first week of the offensive, bringing Iraqi and Kurdish forces closer to Mosul city as civilian displacement grows. Widespread counterattacks hit Kirkuk Rutba and Sinjar, with casualties on both sides and claims of vehicle losses by ISIS. The Mosul campaign threatens the Iraqi half of the caliphate and could trigger a massive humanitarian effort as up to 1 million may be uprooted.

Branstad rejects staffing claim on prison meth issue
Iowa Governor Terry Branstad says meth is being smuggled into prisons but disputes that staffing shortages cause the problem. He notes inmate security remains a priority, with staffing up since 2010 while inmate counts drop. The AFSCME union cites recent positive meth tests and oxycodone finds, attributing smuggling to visitors amid understaffing.
