A 16 year old, Frank Ross Jr. of DeSoto City, Florida, was sentenced to die in the electric chair for the November 15 1976 murder of 64 year old Helen Dixon in Avon Park. The death penalty followed a 17 minute jury deliberation after a first degree murder conviction.

Gunman fatally wounded UAE cabinet member Saif bin Said al Ghobash at Abu Dhabi airport and attempted to hijack a Syrian foreign minister Abdel Halim Khaddam. Seven hostages were seized and forced onto a Czechoslovak cargo jet before surrendering after 90 minutes. Police secured the area as two alleged accomplices were sought.
