New University of Iowa requires $50 advance for all new students

The State Board of Regents ordered a single $50 advance payment for all new undergraduates and certain transfer and professional students. The rule covers dorm residents and health professional programs with billing in three installments for any remaining balance. Deadlines change for dormitory deposits and leaves of absence were approved for several faculty members.

Mailmen to ride taxis in Des Moines plan

Des Moines postal officials announced a pilot and expansion of taxi transport for city carriers to speed deliveries and cut costs. Seventy carriers will ride in taxis between stations and routes, at about 17.3 cents per one way trip versus 20 cents by bus, with an estimated annual saving of 50000 dollars.

Regents appoint 4 to SUI faculty and injuries avoided

Two men escape injury after a car rear ended a farm wagon two miles northwest of Bennett on Friday. Francis Rohlf drove the car while Emil Seebeck was behind the tractor. The Regents named William T. Reid professor and head of mathematics and astronomy at SUI effective next September. Dr Knowler will return to teaching. Drs Eckhardt and Hunt named clinical associate professors of internal medicine and Helen Porteus named assistant director of social services.

Keota man arraigned on third offense drunk driving

Harry Westfall, 40, of rural Keota, was arraigned on a third offense drunk driving charge. He posted a $1,000 bond.

Joseph Becker Watkins suffered a cracked vertebra broken arm broken leg several fractured ribs and face lacerations when run over by a tractor several times while attempting to crank it at the Charles Etscheidt farm. He is in a Cedar Rapids hospital.

Coloradoan Dies In Iowa Crash

A two car collision on highway 20 in Sioux City killed Otis R. Copeland 75 of Colorado Springs Colo while visiting there. His wife Florence 76 and the Ideings couple staying with them were injured. Gary Verhoef seven died at Pella Christian grade school playground after a swing chair struck him on the head during noon hour. Dr Gene VanZee and authorities were at the scene and an autopsy would be performed.

Fire Damages N W Bridge at Clinton

A spectacular fire raged nearly two hours over the Chicago and North Western drawbridge in Clinton causing extensive damage to the 300 foot span. The blaze started likely from a welding torch used by a bridge worker and burned all railroad ties while winds fanned the flames. Clinton and Fulton fire departments fought the blaze, river traffic was tied up, and train routes were rerouted through Davenport and Savanna as the warped mechanism was repaired.

Oelwein Guard Unit Tops With Superior Ratings

In Des Moines Iowa National Guard inspectors awarded 17 superior ratings to five units. The East Iowa unit Oelwein Co D 133rd Regiment led by Captain Joseph H Samuelson Jr earned a top mark for last summer encampment training. Other superior awards cited long term state of training including additional Oelwein units.
