Iowa Regents Tighten Admissions Across State Colleges
The Iowa Board of Regents moved to limit automatic admission to the University of Iowa Iowa State College and Iowa State Teachers College by restricting high school graduates to the upper half of their class. Students in the lower half face four alternatives including conditional admission probation or a summer tryout, or denial. Out-of-state applicants face higher standards and all new undergraduates must complete the Iowa college scholarship and placement tests before acceptance. The attorney general must approve the regulations before they take effect.

Baker Wanted in Iowa Flees Argentine Police
Wilbur Chapman Baker, in his mid 40s and from Spirit Lake Iowa, escaped Argentine police in August while awaiting return to Olmos prison. He faces a 30 year sentence for assault with intent to murder his wife and had appeals pending. The U S embassy confirmed the official report and Governor Loveless pressed for extradition as Argentine authorities said Baker escaped during a Buenos Aires court hearing on a theft charge. The whereabouts remain undetermined.
