The lone ticket matching the six drawn numbers for Wednesdays 2.8 million Iowa Lotto prize was bought at Hy-Vee 1843 Johnson Ave NW Cedar Rapids. Winning numbers were 7 9 21 27 31 and 33. A store worker said the winner had not claimed the prize by last night.
The Iowa Attorney General's Office charges Arlyn Loper, 22, of McGregor with first degree murder in the death of his father Stanley Loper. A skeleton identified as Stanley was found in July after he disappeared in October 1985. Arlyn Loper is jailed in Clayton County.
Cox Cable will launch a hi-fi digital radio service, letting subscribers use a tuning box to access high fidelity sound for 9.50 dollars a month starting November 1. Details on page 3C.
Iowa transportation officials assess an Amtrak plan to run a Chicago to Omaha line via Cedar Rapids and four other central Iowa cities as part of a five city route. Details appear on page 1B.
In Key West Florida Vicki Childress 38 said she grabbed a .38 revolver from under her pillow instead of her inhaler during a drowsy moment. The gun fired penetrating her pillow and lodged part of the bullet in her jawbone. She was hospitalized with a facial wound.
Iowa public school enrollment rose 1.7 percent to 490 663 students this fall, an 8 030 increase the largest since 1969. Gov Branstad cites economic development and migration. home-schoolers added about 800 to the Sept counts. Waterloo urban area saw a decline. Pekin district surged 41 percent after Hedrick closure.
Cedar Rapids parole officer Sue Hall, a 16 year veteran, played a pivotal background role in solving a brutal October 1990 kidnapping and assault. Her instinct linked parolee Patrick Scott McAmis to the crime, leading detectives to identify him. McAmis received a life sentence without parole earlier this year.
The House approved a 151 billion six year highway bill by 343 to 83 with 1.5 billion for Iowa projects including the Avenue of the Saints. Iowa lawmakers praised the measure, while Transportation Secretary Skinner warned of a veto if changes are not made.
Cedar Rapids faces no current large gang problem but officials warn a future rise possible. Social workers law enforcement teachers and community leaders called for higher priority on family programs as they discussed youth violence at Jane Boyd Community House attended by 47 people sponsored by Sen. Paul Pate and Rep. Ron Corbett.
